The Enchanting World of Cenotes in the Riviera Maya

The cenotes are natural wonders in the lush jungles of the Riviera Maya, Mexico. They are freshwater sinkholes filled with crystal-clear water, ancient energy, and breathtaking light. These magical places make the perfect setting for a unique underwater photoshoot.

Recently, I had the chance to photograph Diana, a passionate freediver, in one of these incredible cenotes. The result was more than just a photoshoot. It was an aquatic ballet that celebrated freedom, grace, and the raw beauty of nature and the human spirit.

Diana’s Freediving Journey Underwater

Freediving isn’t just a sport—it’s a way of connecting with the water on a deeper, more intuitive level. As Diana was swimming through the cenote, she became one with her surroundings. Her calm, confident energy was just amazing. It was like watching a modern-day mermaid in her natural element.

Wearing a bold blue bikini, a mask, and fins, she brought the cenote to life for her freediving photoshoot. The contrast of her vibrant outfit against the limestone and soft green mangroves made every shot feel powerful and poetic.

Capturing the Light and Movement in the Cenote

We started the session near the surface, where the light filters beautifully through the water. Diana’s movements were fluid and expressive, and the way her body flowed with the water felt like choreography. As we explored deeper sections of the cenote, we took advantage of its natural ledges, rock formations, and shifting light to highlight her freediving skills.

The entire shoot was a balance between technical precision and creative freedom—something I strive for in every underwater photography session in the Riviera Maya.

Why Cenotes Are Perfect for Underwater Portraits

The cenote where I shoot in Riviera Maya is ideal for underwater photoshoots, even if you're not a freediver. These natural pools offer

  • Shallow areas

  • Filtered sunlight

  • Incredibly clear water

All this creates the perfect conditions for magical underwater portraits. Whether you’re a freediver like Diana or just curious about what it feels like to float and move underwater, these cenotes offer something truly special. You don’t need to be a model or an athlete—just open to the experience.
