Mermaid Photography in Cenotes: A Magical Experience in the Riviera Maya

There’s just something magical about mermaids—mysterious, graceful, and totally captivating. It’s no surprise that so many people are drawn to the idea of becoming one, even just for a moment. And what better place to live out that fantasy than in the crystal-clear waters of a cenote in the heart of the Riviera Maya?

Why Cenotes Are Perfect for Underwater Photography

If you’ve ever been to a cenote, you know there’s something amazing about them. These natural freshwater sinkholes are found throughout the Riviera Maya and offer some of the best conditions for underwater photography.

Here’s why cenotes are the ideal setting for a mermaid shoot:

  • Crystal-clear water: Perfect for dreamy, high-resolution underwater portraits

  • Natural light beams: Sunlight filtering through the water adds a magical touch

  • Still water: Easier to pose and move with control underwater

  • Stunning backdrops: Limestone formations and tree roots add drama and depth

Each cenote has its own unique charm, and they all make amazing photo locations, but of course, I have my favorite one located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Believe me, it looks like it was custom-made for underwater portraits.

Somehow, mermaids just love cenotes. Throughout my career as an underwater photographer in the Riviera Maya, I’ve photographed dozens of them—and you can learn all about their magical stories in my mermaid blog. my mermaid’s blog.

Why the Riviera Maya Is the Ultimate Mermaid Destination

The Riviera Maya is known for its breathtaking cenotes—but one, in particular, has become my favorite spot for capturing mermaid magic. This cenote is located between Tulum and Playa del Carmen, and offers the perfect setting: clear water, rock formations, and peaceful surroundings that feel like they’re straight out of a fairytale.

All my underwater photoshoots take place in this carefully selected location easily accessible from any place in Riviera Maya—and well worth the trip even if you're staying in Cancun. In fact, many of our clients make the drive just to experience this one-of-a-kind underwater shoot.
