Why an Underwater Maternity Photoshoot Is Totally Worth It (and How to Make It Magical)

Pregnancy is one of the most incredible journeys you’ll ever experience. It’s full of feelings, changes, and that amazing anticipation of meeting your little one. So why not capture this magical chapter in a way that’s just as unique?

An underwater maternity photoshoot is a breathtaking way to celebrate your journey. Floating weightlessly in the serene, crystal-clear waters of a cenote in the Riviera Maya, allows you to create stunning portraits that feel almost dreamlike.

More than just a photoshoot, my underwater maternity sessions are full experiences designed to help you connect with your body, your baby, and the beautiful nature around you. Here’s why so many expecting moms are absolutely loving their underwater sessions:

  • A one-of-a-kind experience: Each session is a chance to explore the incredible underwater world of a cenote; a natural wonder you won’t find anywhere else.

  • Step out of your comfort zone: Whether you’re completely new to being underwater or a confident swimmer, this is your chance to try something new. My sessions are designed for all levels, even if you don’t know how to swim! (You can read more about that in my Afraid of the Water or Don’t Know How to Swim? blog).

  • Timeless keepsakes: The photos you’ll receive will be truly unique, emotional, and full of meaning; a story your little one will one day look back on to see how strong, graceful, and adventurous their mom was.

How Does an Underwater Maternity Photoshoot Work?

My underwater photoshoots are designed to be easy, enjoyable, and completely stress-free; even if it’s your first time underwater! Here’s what you can expect:

  • Choosing your outfit: We’ll go through my wardrobe collection to find the dress that flatters you best underwater. You’re also welcome to bring your own outfit if you prefer a personal touch. (If you need insporation, check out my blog Underwater Photoshoot Outfit Ideas).

  • Pre-shoot guidance: Before we start, I’ll guide you through simple breathing and posing techniques to help you feel relaxed and confident underwater. You’ll also have time to practice before we begin.

  • During the session: Once you’re ready, we’ll dive in together! A safety assistant will always be by your side, ensuring you feel comfortable and supported throughout the entire experience.

Each step is designed to help you relax, enjoy the moment, and create breathtaking underwater maternity portraits.

Preparing for Your Underwater Maternity Photoshoot

Now that you know how it works, let’s talk about how to make the most of your experience and get truly stunning results.

Here are a few simple tips to prepare:

  • Add a jungle photoshoot: Combine your underwater photos with a short session around the cenote or in the shallow areas. The lush jungle and crystal-clear water make the perfect natural backdrop to complement your underwater portraits.

  • Add Some Magic to Your Photoshoot: To make your experience even more special, you can add a creative twist with my exclusive add-ons, like flowing flying dresses, mermaid tails, or even angel wings for the jungle session. These props aren’t just beautiful; they help you feel confident, playful, and totally immersed in the fantasy of the shoot. These pieces are available for rent.

  • Makeup: You don’t really need to wear makeup for underwater sessions, since the focus is on the overall composition rather than close-ups. But if you’d still like to wear some, check out my blog on Underwater Photoshoot Makeup Tips for the best waterproof products and application advice.

When Is the Best Time for an Underwater Maternity Photoshoot?

For most moms-to-be, the best time for a maternity underwater photoshoot is when your baby bump is beautifully visible but you still feel comfortable moving around.

That’s usually between the late 7th and 8th month of pregnancy (around weeks 26–34). Of course, every pregnancy is unique, so it’s always best to check with your doctor before scheduling, especially if traveling.

Is It Safe to Do an Underwater Maternity Photoshoot?

Absolutely! I completely understand that the idea of going underwater while pregnant can sound a little intimidating, but trust me, it’s much easier than it seems.

You’ll only be underwater for a few seconds at a time, just long enough to capture each pose beautifully. Think of it like taking a refreshing swim, only gentler. The cenotes where I shoot has shallow areas or places to hold onto, so you’ll always feel safe and supported.

You’ll also have a dedicated safety assistant by your side during the entire session. She’ll help you move comfortably from one spot to another by towing you gently with a buoy ring so you can relax and enjoy the experience without effort.

Safety and comfort are always my top priorities, so you can simply focus on feeling beautiful and present in this magical moment.

A Magical Way to Celebrate Your Pregnancy

An underwater maternity photoshoot in a cenote is such a beautiful way to celebrate this stage of your life. It’s not just about the photos, it’s about feeling calm, strong, and connected with nature as you move gracefully underwater.

You don’t need to be a pro swimmer or model, I’ll guide you through every step so you can just relax and enjoy the experience.

If this sounds like the kind of memory you’d love to create, let’s make it happen.
